Globus ====== `Globus `_ provides a secure, unified interface to your research data. Use Globus to 'fire and forget' high-performance data transfers between systems within and across organizations. Globus lets you use a web browser or command line interface to submit transfer and synchronization requests, optionally choosing encryption. Globus takes it from there. Or even schedule the transfer or set up a flow to automate the data transfer. Your data is transferred directly between the source and destination systems while Globus tunes performance parameters, maintains security, monitors progress, and validates correctness. You can check the transfer status at any time via the Globus activity page and will receive email when the transfer completes! If a network or system involved in the transfer goes down, Globus automatically resumes the transfer when the component comes back online. If an issue requires action from you, such as an expired credential or exceeded disk quota, Globus resumes the transfer after you remedy the problem. If a transfer has not made progress after a period of time (usually 3 days), the transfer will expire and you will be notified. Access the Globus web app -------------------------- Go to the Globus website: `https://www.globus.org/ `_ and click on :guilabel:`Log in`. Select :guilabel:`University of York` as your organisation from the dropdown list. You will be redirected to the usual University of York login page. Enter your university credentials. Upon successful login, you will be prompted to grant Globus consent to use your identity to access information and perform actions on your behalf. You must consent to proceed. Locate your collections in the file manager ------------------------------------------- Once logged in, you will be directed to the File Manager. In the :guilabel:`Collection` search bar (located at the top), type "UoY". This will display all available Globus Collections associated with the University of York. Request a new collection (if needed) ------------------------------------ If none of the displayed collections points to the specific area on Storage where your data is located, you will need to request a new Globus Collection. Please contact `itsupport@york.ac.uk `_ and provide the following information for the new collection setup: 1. The location on Storage where you would like a collection to be created 2. The name that you want to give this collection 3. Any additional description or keywords that help describe the collection's content (optional) Initiate a data transfer to Viking ---------------------------------- In the :guilabel:`File Manager`, ensure you are in the two-pane view (middle button at the top right). In the first pane :guilabel:`source`, navigate to and select the folder or files you wish to transfer from your University of York collection. In the second pane :guilabel:`destination`, search for and select the `UoY Viking2 Longship Projects `_ collection and navigate to your project folder. This is your destination on Viking Longship. For potentially faster transfers, you may tentatively also use: `UoY - Viking2 Scratch Projects `_, `UoY - Viking2 Scratch Users `_, or `UoY - Viking2 Longship Projects SE `_. .. note:: These collections are still in setup; currently, only transfers from campus to these collections are functional, not the other way around. Once both source and destination are selected, click the :guilabel:`Start` button (right-pointing arrow above the first pane) to start the transfer. You will receive a notification confirming that your transfer task has been submitted. You can monitor its progress in the :guilabel:`Activity` tab.
