Transferring data ================== Globus simplifies transferring large amounts of data between different storage systems. Compared to traditional methods like ``rsync`` or ``scp``, it offers several advantages: * **Reliability**: Globus automatically resumes transfers if they are interrupted by network issues. * **Performance**: It uses parallel data streams to achieve higher transfer speeds than most other methods. * **Convenience**: You can start a transfer and close your laptop. Globus runs in the background and emails you upon completion. How to Transfer Data --------------------- The process for transferring data is managed via the `File Manager `_ in your browser, which provides a two-pane interface to select a source and a destination. **Example: Transferring data to Viking** 1. **Open the two-pane view**: In the `File Manager `_, ensure you are in the two-pane view by clicking the middle icon in the top-right corner. 2. **Select your source**: In the left pane, search for and select your source collection (e.g., a `University of York collection `_ or your :ref:`'Personal Collection' ` if transferring from your own machine). Navigate to and select the folder or files you wish to transfer. 3. **Select your destination**: In the right pane, search for the appropriate **Viking collection** and select it. Navigate to the folder where you want to place the data. The available collections are: * `UoY - Viking2 Scratch Projects `_ * `UoY - Viking2 Scratch Users `_ * `UoY - Viking2 Longship Projects SE `_ 4. **Start the transfer**: Click the blue :guilabel:`Start` button above the left pane to begin the transfer. You will receive a notification that your task has been submitted, and you can monitor its progress in the :guilabel:`Activity` tab. .. note:: Please be aware that transfers between the Scratch collections (`UoY - Viking2 Scratch Projects `_ and `UoY - Viking2 Scratch Users `_) and the Longship SE collection (`UoY - Viking2 Longship Projects SE `_) are not yet functional.
