Getting started

This guide will walk you through the steps to get started with `Open OnDemand <https://openondemand.org/>`_.

What is Open OnDemand?
-----------------------

`Open OnDemand <https://openondemand.org/>`_ is a web-based portal that provides access to high-performance computing resources. It allows you to interact with the HPC system through a web browser, without needing to know how to use the command line. 

Logging in
----------

    To access Open OnDemand on Viking you must be either `connected to the VPN. <https://www.york.ac.uk/it-services/services/vpn/>`_ or the wired campus network. Campus WiFi without the VPN will not work.

To get started, open a web browser and first navigate to https://viking.york.ac.uk/. Log in with your Viking username and password (this is your IT Services username and password).

You will now be logged into the Flight Web Suite where you can access the Flight Console, Flight Desktop and Flight Files apps which run directly in your web browser.

To continue on to Open OnDemand, click the Open OnDemand button on the lower right to then login one again and you'll be logged into the Open OnDemand :doc:`main dashboard <dashboard>`.
